The Neuropixels Recording system consists of the following elements, counting out from the animal. 

   I.    Probe 

   II.   Headstage (digital interface) 

   III.  Cable 

   IV.  PXI Controller Module 

   V.   PXI Chassis 

   VI.  PXI to PCIe card, cable, card 

   VII. Computer with PCIe bus

Items V-VII are available from a variety of vendors, but we have not tested components from every vendor. Help is harder to get if you choose system parts from untested vendors. PXI system requirements and recommendations are listed in detail on the SpikeGLX  Systems Requirement tab. The PXI chassis’s come in a   variety of sizes.  We have tested 5 cards operating 20 probes simultaneously with no lost data or lags. If you don’t expect to ever use more than 1 or 2 probes simultaneously a lower capacity option is coming   (OneBox).
